Items for nativity scene

In an article of this section I talked at length about the need to use the imagination to build a beautiful nativity scene, above all I underlined how from many materials that can be found almost everywhere, and with a pinch of the aforementioned fantasy, it is possible to truly everything and in a very short time, with truly amazing final results. Obviously, however, not everyone has the imagination to be able to invent constructions, statuettes or artistic touches for their nativity scene, or they have this artistic vein, let's say so, but they do not have the time to put it into practice; if you belong to these last two categories, keep reading and do not despair, the crib items are many and include a great variety of objects to make a crib without having to invent anything.

And there was light

First of all, there are many lights that can be applied to your crib, there are different types some complex and sophisticated others much less, think that there are very useful light dimmers to create wonderful effects, but we will talk about this elsewhere; if you don't want to spend too much money, even a simple necklace of Christmas lights that hasn't found a place on your Christmas tree can be safely recycled to light up your scene.

Scenographic elements

But the crib is not made only of lights, all the characters are to be placed and obviously we must not forget to create a hut, or in its place a beautiful cave, where to put the absolute protagonist of our crib, and then some house for the village that, let's face it, makes a good impression. Well you can find everything already beautiful and ready in many shops, during normal times of the year only the best model shops or similar have some figurine or some houses for the nativity scene, or there is always the internet with its specialized online shops, but during the Christmas period many shops are equipped with these items and it will be a breeze to find them. Moreover, always in this joyful time of the year, many Christmas markets pop up almost everywhere. Both the houses and the statuettes are sold in different styles, historical or traditional, with different clothes, Arab style houses and not, in short, you can find just about everything. Obviously, however, when you buy these items try to always keep the proportions and above all do not change styles! Think of how comical it could be to see shepherds dressed in the Neapolitan tradition, others dressed like the shepherds of Bethlehem, or better still, to see a gigantic shepherd twice as tall as the other or even taller than the village houses or hut, in short, look for to always buy carefully.

The do-it-yourself nativity scene

For those who have fantasy to sell instead, it is good that they know that the crib items concern them too, in fact there are many special materials suitable exclusively for the creation of cribs that can be bought, but there are also scenographic elements ready to be placed here and there in your crib. Let's take some small examples, if you want to make the houses in the village yourself, you will find numerous elements, such as small fixtures to apply, or, just think, the miniature roof tiles to be placed one by one. And if you want to put a tree somewhere, you can also find ready-made trees among the crib items in addition to the traditional items such as the manger, the characters and the hut.

The Christmas Markets

We talked about the Christmas markets a few lines above, however it is a good idea to investigate this question so that you know that by wandering in these places you can really find everything. In Campania many artisans produce their statuettes and often use real characters and portray them in the form of a nativity scene item, in this period it will not be at all difficult to find statuettes that portray Lavezzi or Hamsik, or some television personality, not to mention the politicians. The markets are an excellent opportunity to embellish and enrich your amateur nativity scene because among the stalls there are many very interesting things.

The crib is an ancient Christmas tradition that has its roots in the medieval period and seems to be an Italian invention: the first to set up a living representation of the Nativity was in fact St. Francis in 1223, but it will have to wait until 1700 before this custom takes foot throughout Italy. The greatest nativity scene tradition still remains the Neapolitan one, followed by the Genoese and Bolognese ones. The differences are mainly in the material and in the processing of the figurines, while the setting and iconography remain quite similar. The nativity scene is a ritual that is handed down from generation to generation, so the inherited figurines are often accompanied by more modern ones, purchased over the years.

There are so many different ways of representing the nativity scene from minimal crib where only the Holy Family appears to the sumptuous one with ponds, hydraulic pumps and lights. Before starting to set up, it is important to understand how much space we have available, how much we want to spend and how much time we want to dedicate!

An idea for those who don't have space at home is to set up a nativity scene in the garden: there are statues ranging from 50 cm to 1 meter in height, with which you can create a sort of hyper-realistic nativity scene outside your home. Of course, such a large nativity scene will not be very detailed! If you have children it will certainly be more fun to create a small nativity scene full of different elements and characters. Not only the cave then but also the shepherds, the sheep, the various professions (innkeeper, baker, etc.) and various architectural elements such as the well, the mill, the bridge.

After choosing the place in which to set up the crib you will have to imagine the positioning of the various elements and lights. The latter must be collected at the beginning, to better hide them and later avoid dropping the statues. Once you have positioned the huts, houses and lights, you can take care of the setting in which to place the statues. This phase can be carried out with the help of children who will have fun placing the paper with the starry sky, creating mountains of papier-mâché and scattering moss and pebbles. It is important to keep the hut and the larger statues in the foreground, and create a second floor of smaller houses and characters to give depth and realism to the scene.

Whether you decide to set up a traditional nativity scene set in Palestine or more linked to popular tradition, there are some precautions that cannot be ignored, if we want to respect tradition: the statue of Jesus, for example, should not be placed in the manger before the night of the December 24 and the Three Wise Men must be placed far from the hut, because they are still on their way and will arrive only for the day of the Epiphany.

Among the different types of nativity scenes around the world there is also a more secular one, which involves the construction of a Christmas village. An interesting alternative to the classic nativity scene and a beautiful piece of furniture. Full of buildings, shops and illuminated houses decorated for the holidays, it is characterized by very detailed carousels and moving elements. This alternative representation of Christmas has spread rapidly especially in the United States and is loved by collectors, who every year buy new items and accessories to add to the village.

How to decorate the fir in the garden and things to know

Decorate thefir of the garden with external lights preferably white or with light tubes.

Prefer plastic materials that are resistant to both bad weather and shocks, being at the same time very light, thus avoiding damage caused by accidental falls yet others Christmas decorations also do-it-yourself.
